What is the touchscreen?

A touchscreen is said to be an input device with which users can do all the work by just touching the screen. There are many devices which may or may not have an electronic display, but touchscreen technology can be installed anywhere.

Touchscreen Components

There are three components in a touchscreen, which include a touch sensor, controller, and software. The touch sensor has the job of measuring the contact between the finger and the touchscreen. The measurement can be done at any point in time.

The controller has the job of capturing the touch information provided by the touch sensor. This information is provided to the processor. The software works with the touch sensor and controller to respond to the touch done by a user.

Types of touchscreen technology

There are five types of the touchscreen, and all of them are based upon the touch sensor used in them. These types are as follows.

Resistive Touchscreen Technology

This technology is considered as the commonest one as it has a glass panel having a coating of two electrically conductive thin metallic layers. These metallic layers are separated by a narrow gap. The gap consists of separator dots. When the outer surface s touched, it brings the two conductive layers into contact. The panel allows the voltage to pass and metal contact divides the voltage. This change in energy decides the shift in touch.

Capacitive Touchscreen Technology

Another most popular touchscreen technology is a capacitive touchscreen. In this type of touchscreen, there is a glass panel on which there is a thin transparent charge storing electrode layer. In this type of touchscreen, the electrical conductivity of humans is necessary. As soon as a user touches the screen, a reaction occurs between the electricity in the human body and the electrode layer. The changes in capacitance are measured by the sensors located at the four corners of the screen. There are two types of capacitive touchscreen technologies, which are as follows.

  • Projected Capacitive Touch Screen Technology

Infrared Touchscreen Technology

In this touchscreen technology, infrared light is used, which causes interruption on the screen. The panel of the screen has infrared LEDs and phototransistors, and they are positioned opposite to each other. An invisible infrared grid of infrared light is created due to this setup. As soon as a finger is placed ion the screen, the interruption in light occurs, which determines the point of contact.

Acoustic Wave Touch Screen Technology

This is an advanced touchscreen technology in which sound waves are sent through the glass panels. Piezoelectric transducers and receivers are available on the sides of the board. As soon as the screen receives a touch, a portion of the sound is absorbed and sent to the transducer, which identifies the point of contact.
